Man arrested after dead dog found in cardboard box

GUADALUPE, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Friday morning after a dead dog was found in a cardboard box.
MCSO said a deputy responded to Guadalupe after they received a call about a dead dog in a box.
The deputy, along with the Animal Crimes Unit, found the box tied shut near a block wall.
A witness told deputies that he had seen the suspect, 59-year-old Ricardo Ramirez Cupis, carrying the box last Saturday along the street.
The witness said he saw a small dog escape from the box, but Cupis grabbed the animal and put him back inside.
The witness said he saw the box sitting next to the wall on Wednesday, but didn’t investigate until Friday when he noticed a foul odor coming from the box. He went on to see the dog’s nose poking out of the bottom of the box.
A deputy spoke with Cupis, who reportedly admitted that he had put the dog into the box and left it near the fence because the dog was sick and he didn’t want it to die at his house.
Cupis was arrested and booked into jail on a felony charge of animal cruelty.
