MESA, Ariz. – A water main break in Mesa is causing quite a headache for East Valley drivers.

Broadway Road between Loop 101 and Dobson Road is a muddy mess. The westbound lanes are closed.

A sinkhole opened up in the water-soaked street. Aerial video from Chopper 3 showed a large pit in the middle of the roadway.

Westbound traffic has been shifted to the eastbound side of the street, so drivers are getting through. The restrictions, however, are making it slow going because there’s only one lane in each direction.

Crews are working to repair the water main, but those restrictions on Broadway Road are expected to remain in place through at least the evening rush hour, and possibly into the weekend.

Because of the major mess, 3TV traffic reporter Gina Maravilla advised to people to avoid the area if at all possible.

“Move down to Southern or up to Main Street to get around the restrictions here,” she said.
