PHOENIX -- A one-year-old boy who had to be rescued from a Phoenix canal last month has died.

Phoenix police said that Gabriel Cordova died early Wednesday morning.

On the morning of July 25, a passerby saw Cordova in the canal at 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road and called 911.

CPR was performed on scene, and Cordova was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Police said the child had wandered from his family’s apartment where he was being watched by his teenage siblings.

Cordova made his way into the canal after going through a hole in a block wall that surrounds the apartment complex.
