SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -- Police have apprehended a man who failed to pull over for an officer and subsequently crashed into a lightpole on Monday.

It happened at about 4 p.m. near Gantzel and Bella Vista roads. A Pinal County detective was driving an unmarked car when he noticed the suspect, Gabriel Leon, 29, commit several traffic violations in his 2000 Ford Expedition. Leon reportedly sped up and fled when the detective initiated a stop.

A marked police vehicle on patrol took over the pursuit, but Leon continued to drive through a residential neighborhood. Eventually, he pulled into a Fry's parking lot by Hunt Highway. Deputies said the vehicle drove directly into a concrete pillar with a light pole in it.

Leon ran out, leaving behind his 19-year-old passenger Gabriella Hernandez. He went through the store and was caught in the backyard of a residence.

After a struggle with two citizens and a deputy, he was restrained and taken into custody.

Police believe Leon was impaired.
