MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police says a suspect died Sunday morning in an officer-involved shooting in the area of Williams and Main Street.
According to police, a 49-year-old man in a wheelchair was being questioned outside when officers discovered he had a felony warrant for drugs.
Police said at some point during their conversation officers noticed the man was fidgeting with his waistband.
Police found two knives concealed in the waistband, and then went on to discover a handgun as well.
Officers and the man reportedly began struggling over the firearm, at which time one of the officers fired his gun at least once, striking the suspect.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect has had several interactions in the past with officers, most recently over drugs.
There were a total of three officers on scene.
All three will be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
