Christian Sam to ASU: 3-star LB commits to Sun DevilsPosted: Updated:
Over the last year, Arizona State has become home to one of the nation’s most aggressive defenses, and on Thursday, they picked up a commitment from a new weapon to carry on the attack for years to come.
Christian Sam, an outside linebacker and class of 2014 recruit from Allen High School in Allen, Texas, announced via Twitter that he has committed to ASU.
Sam is rated as a 3-star prospect by the major recruiting services, and chose the Sun Devils over his other finalists: Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech and Mississippi. He once appeared to be a lock to stay in Texas, but recent trips helped to sway his decision to the Sun Devils favor.
On the field, the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Sam is on the lighter side for a linebacker, but has the frame to add 20-30 pounds in college, especially with ASU's top notch strength and conditioning program. He has good speed, running a 4.74 per ESPN, and is still developing in coverage. Sam could potentially be a great fit for the SPUR position, a hybrid of safety and outside linebacker that would take advantage of his passing rush skills and ability to run down ballcarriers from sideline to sideline.
Last season, Sam made 57 tackles, with 11 sacks and one interception for the Eagles.
Sam becomes the eighth commit to ASU's 2014 recruiting class and fifth on the defensive side of the ball.
