AVONDALE, Ariz. -- An armed man who reportedly was acting erratically inside an Avondale convenience store is dead after being shot by police.
A store employee told 3TV the suspect had a knife and a Taser.
When police arrived, the suspect displayed a weapon towards officers, according to an email from Sgt. Brandon Busse with the Avondale Police Dept.
It happened shortly before 8 a.m. at McDowell Road and Avondale Boulevard, right across the street from Phoenix Children's Hospital Southwest Valley Center.
The suspect, 19-year-old Shaun Nathaniel Walters, was transported by medical helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 9:40 a.m.
The officer involved in the shooting was not injured.
The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave for the duration of the investigation. That is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
