PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Police are unsure whose gun a boy found while playing in the dirt by his house.

A 9-year-old boy who lives on Aubrey Street by SR-89 told his mother he was looking for worms in a grassy patch when he found the gun wrapped in a plastic bag. She then called the police.

Police say the rusty 38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver was wrapped in a plastic bag and had one bullet in a chamber.

The officer on scene said it was just slightly hidden under dirt, and that it appeared someone planned to retrieve it later.

Authorities said the gun's serial number has been checked and it's not reported missing.
