Phoenix police cruiser flipped on its side in crashPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- It’s a sight that brought traffic to a halt. A Phoenix Police cruiser was flipped onto its side after an officer was hit by another driver in the intersection of Greenway and 19th Avenue.
“He seemed to be okay, visually,” said witness Brian Barton, who watched the officer climb out of his car. Barton told 3TV the officer’s car had its lights on, headed eastbound when he was hit.
“I don’t know how she didn’t see him, or what, but she just smashed into him,” said Barton.
Phoenix police say the officer involved was on his way to help in a hit-and-run investigation at the time of the crash. But, to add to the confusion of the scene, two other accidents had occurred in the same area just minutes before.
“It’s ridiculous,” said Drew Lewis who was involved in the first crash. “People are in a hurry. That’s basically what it boils down to.”
Police say everyone involved in all of the collisions is expected to be okay. The officer suffered minor injuries, according to Sgt. Steve Martos.
“We are absolutely grateful,” said Martos.
Police are still looking into factors which contributed to the crash involving one of their own, including the color of the traffic signal at the time of the crash.
Witnesses say the driver who hit the officer apparently didn’t yield.
“You gotta pay attention,” said Barton. “That’s the best thing we can learn out of all of this.”
