"These fairs are free and are in the Phoenix communities and beyond - - some 30 Arizona cities," said Michelle Slayton, president of McDonald's Owner/Operator Association of Phoenix and northern Arizona. "We partnered with more than 90 community organizations to provide valuable information on health and safety, so bring the family."
This is the second consecutive year McDonald's has offered the backpack giveaway and community event.
"We believe this community outreach event will enrich our customers' lives and help our local families prepare for the upcoming school year," Slayton said.
Two hundred backpacks with school supplies will be given away at a free kids' event in Casa Grande on Saturday.
The Alliance for School Choice and the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options will be giving away the backpacks at the Palm Island Aquatic Center, 1115 N. Brown Ave. The giveaway begins at 12:30 p.m.
Pinal County parents and children are invited to learn about school choice options and enjoy the pool for free.
On Aug. 4, school-age children can receive a free backpack at the 9th Annual Niños Seguros Back to School & Safety Fair at Grand Canyon University, 3300 W. Camelback Road, in Phoenix. The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Event organizers said 3,000 backpacks, courtesy of event sponsors Grand Canyon University, SRP and Telcel, will be distributed at the family festival.
In order to redeem a backpack, children must have a voucher that will be provided at the event on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are encouraged to get there early as backpacks are limited to availability. There will also be free immunizations and health screening along with eight laptops raffled off during the event courtesy of Air Products.
