MESA, Ariz. -- A man accused of stealing cats in Mesa was found guilty on Thursday.

Scott Graham was arrested last fall after he was caught on surveillance camera stealing a cat named Biscuit.

Biscuit and two other cats were later found dead and mutilated.

Graham admitted to taking up to 40 cats in the area around Baseline and Alma School roads but said he never hurt any of them.

Prosecutors said there wasn't enough evidence to accuse him of killing the cats so Graham was only charged with stealing Biscuit.

Several of the cat owners were in court Thursday as the verdict came down.

"I guess we're lucky because a lot of people who lose pets never get a resolve to it, never get an answer, so at least we with our community were able to capture this person and bring him to the court," Robert Kalis said.

"This is amazing, in my mind it's unprecedented," said Ben Smith, Block Watch captain. "I want to hope that it's going to set new ground for future animal cases."

Graham's sentencing trial is next month.
