TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police have identified the man who was fatally shot by officers Wednesday afternoon.
Police said 43-year-old John Wheelihan died after being shot multiple times.
Tempe police shot Wheelihan after going to a home near Price Road and Southern Avenue to serve a narcotics search warrant.
Police said Wheelihan walked out the back door with a Whisper .22 caliber air rifle and started to approach detectives who were working as the rear perimiter.
After being told multiple times to drop his weapon, police said Weelihan raised the rifle at officers, at which time he was shot.
Wheelihan was taken to a hospital, but later died from his injuries.
No officers were injured.
An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
