Man shot and killed in Phoenix; suspect in custodyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Police were called to the scene of a deadly shooting Monday night near Adams and 16th streets in Phoenix.
Police have not confirmed the identity of the victim, but the victim's father tells 3TV that it was his son, Larry Williams, who was shot and killed.
Police say the incident started at about 9 p.m. with a fight in the neighborhood.
"The victim and a witness were standing on the sidewalk when the suspect approached from behind, began yelling at the victim, and fired multiple shots at the victim from a handgun," Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump said in an email Tuesday morning.
The suspect fled the scene.
Officers who were on a traffic stop nearby immediately responded and found the victims, believed to be Williams, 42, lying on the sidewalk.
Several streets in the area were locked down as officers began searching for the gunman. Helicopters with searchlights circled overhead as police officers and SWAT members on the ground scoured the area for the suspect.
"A suspect known to the victim was identified and arrested nearby," Crump said.
Detectives have not released any details about that suspect or his connection with Williams.
The investigation is ongoing.
