First day of school for some students!Posted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. - With our hot, muggy weather, it sure doesn't feel like it's time to head back to school! But for some students, it was time to say "goodbye" to summer vacation and "hello" to a new school year.
After seven weeks of vacation, students in the Chandler Unified School District headed back to class Monday.
At Sanborn Elementary, a majority of the kids seemed excited. Many were dressed in new clothes and carrying new backpacks and supplies. "I'm excited to go play on the playground," said one kindergartner happily.
Some parents had more first-day blues than their kids. "They're mommy's girls, so it's really hard because they're usually stay-at-home babies," said one mom ruefully. "It's really hard."
"She's growing up without me," said another mom, wiping a tear. "She has to have her own life now; she's not going to need me as much. It's very emotional."
July may sound early for kids to go back to school but the principal says students get a two-week vacation in October while most other districts are in class.
On a side note, the National Retail Federation says the average American family will spend about $635 on school supplies, electronics, and clothes this year. In all, back-to-school shoppers are expected to pump about 26-billion-dollars into the economy.
