Gas pump violations increasePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- When it comes to pumping gas, it turns out one in five pumps in Arizona are not in compliance.
That’s the finding from the annual report released by the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures.
From July 2012 to June 30, 2013, field investigators audited nearly 2,000 gas stations across Arizona and tested over 27,000 individual nozzles.
Their findings may make you lose confidence in gas stations. The agency says 17.1 percent of pumps were out of compliance, that's actually a 3 percent jump from just a year ago.
Here’s a breakdown of some of their findings.
Four-thousand-761gas pump violations were discovered during unannounced inspections.
Of those inspections, 254 gas pumps were actually shut down for non-compliance, meaning they dispensed less fuel than what was registered on the pump.
There were 340 violations of so called ‘Meter Creep,’ where the customer is charged without gas being dispensed.
And over $350,000 in civil penalties have been levied because of the gas pump goof ups.
