Meet the new Diamondbacks mascot -- D-backs LuchadorPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks are introducing a new official mascot -- the D-backs Luchador. Unique among mascots in professional sports, he's sure to be a hit with fans, especially the young ones.
"The popularity of last year's Lucha Libre mask, which was later followed by a Lucha Libre match, inspired the creation of the Luchador character and this year the mascot features a new look," reads a news release posted Thursday on the organization's website. "The D-backs Luchador speaks both fluent Spanish and English and represents a character that you would find at a Lucha Libre match."

Lucha Libre is Spanish for "free fighting." The wrestlers, luchadores, wear colorful masks that embody a wrestler's individual identity. Those masks, which have become symbols of Mexican culture over the years, are an important part of Lucha Libre, so much so that removing an opponent's mask during a match can be grounds for disqualification.
At next weekend's Diamondbacks vs. Padres game at Chase Field, 20,000 lucky fans will receive Luchador masks courtesy of Circle K and Univision Arizona. At the Sept. 15 game, 5,000 kids will will get Luchador capes courtesy of Chevrolet.
