DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) -- Federal authorities at the southern Arizona border say they've seized thousands of rounds of ammunition headed for Mexico and arrested an Avondale man. Customs and Border Protection officers assigned to the Port of Douglas were conducting routine outbound inspections Thursday along with Douglas Border Patrol agents and Douglas Police.
They referred 41-year-old Louis Armando Collins-Avila for an additional inspection of his SUV.
During the inspection, officials say they found 3,000 rounds of ammunition often used in assault weapons along with 2,000 rounds of 9 mm ammo and 1,000 rounds of .38-caliber ammunition.
The vehicle and ammunition were processed for seizure.
Collins-Avila was taken into custody and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation.
Authorities didn't immediately know Friday if Collins-Avila had a lawyer.
