BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- Maricopa County sheriff's detectives are working to find out who shot a 69-year-old man in the desert area along state Route 85 west of Buckeye Wednesday morning.

At about 9:15 a.m., the Buckeye Police Department contacted the sheriff's office about a shooting victim at the Love's truck stop at Interstate 10 and Miller Road.

MCSO spokesman Sgt. Brandon Jones said the man and his girlfriend were visiting the area when they stopped in a desert area near the Gila River. At that point the man was shot.

It is unknown who shot him or why.

Jones said the couple immediately drove to the Love's gas station and asked for help.

The man was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. His name has not been released.
