SUN CITY, Ariz. -- A Valley couple is lucky they weren’t seriously injured after their car hit a train Friday evening.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said just before 6 p.m. the couple stopped for a train at 99th Avenue and Grand Avenue.

While waiting for the train to pass, the man’s foot slipped off the brake and their vehicle struck one of the train’s last cars.

The vehicle did a 180, but did not hit the train again.

Grand Avenue had to be closed for a brief time during rush hour to deal with the accident.

The man suffered only minor injuries, while the woman was hospitalized with a couple of broken bones.

Their vehicle is said to be a total loss.
