PHOENIX -- A body was found in a canal Sunday afternoon near 43rd Avenue and Peoria.
Police said the body was discovered when a person waiting at a nearby bus stop spotted a shoe sticking out of the canal gate.
The person realized that the shoe was attached to a leg, and called 9-1-1.
According to police, there is some decomposition, which means the body had been in the water for a while.
Authorities will be examining any trauma to the body to determine if foul play might have been involved.
Police said a lot of the time bodies found in the canal belong to transients who were trying to go swimming.
However, in this particular case the person was wearing a new-looking pair of shoes, which suggests the person was not a transient.
