Phoenix homeowner describes moments after flames broke outPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix firefighters are investigating what started a fire in Central Phoenix which quickly tore through one house and spread to the neighboring backyard.
Homeowner Deborah Florez told 3TV she had just stepped outside when she noticed flames just before 7 p.m. Friday.
“I went to come outside, and I felt real hot, and I looked and there’s a big ball of fire,” said Florez. “I’m like, ‘fire, fire!’ It was huge, next thing you know the windows were busting. I called 911, and that was it.”
More than a couple dozen firefighters quickly responded to the property near 30th Avenue and Bethany Home. Firefighters said the heat made their job more challenging and required extra crews, so firefighters could rotate every ten to twelve minutes.
It’s not yet known what caused the fire, but a spokesman for Phoenix Fire says it’s believed the fire started on the patio and spread to the attic.
“I think the fire had probably been smoldering for quite a while up in the attic," said homeowner Ramon Navarro, who used to be a wildland firefighter himself. "Everything in our house is gone.“
Fortunately, no one was hurt.
