MESA, Ariz. -- A house fire in east Mesa early Friday morning was quickly contained before spreading to other homes.

The four members of the household, a couple and possibly an adult child and his or her boyfriend or girlfriend, were able to escape safely. They are currently staying with family.

The house by Stapley Drive and Main Street caught fire at about 3:30 a.m. The husband attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose, but the flames had spread by the time firefighters arrived.

Dozens of crews originally responded, with concern that the fire would grow because of the material of the older homes. The blaze was quickly isolated to just the one house.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
