MESA, Ariz. -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested a man they say admitted killing his 45-year-old girlfriend with a baseball bat.

Jose Gonzalez-Esparza, 34, called 911 Monday night to report that he found his girlfriend unresponsive on the floor of their trailer, according to court documents.

Deputies responded to a trailer park near Main Street and Loop 202 in Mesa and found Maria Gomez dead in her living room. They said she had massive blunt force trauma to her face and head.

Deputies located Gonzalez-Esparza hiding in the neighborhood and took him into custody.

Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Joaquin Enriquez said Gonzalez-Esparza admitted hitting his girlfriend with a baseball bat after an argument.

Gomez and Gonzalez-Esparza had been in a relationship for about two years.

He faces one count of second-degree murder.
