Baby-sitting certification class offers CPR, first-aid trainingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Now that school is out for the summer, many kids are probably wondering what to do with their new-found free time. They probably are looking for ways to earn a little flow, too.
That's why the United Phoenix Firefighters Association is hosting a baby-sitter certification course event this weekend. The class is geared toward kids 11 and older. They will learn the ins and outs of baby-sitting highlighted by CPR, choking emergency and first-aid training.
"After this class, I became more confident in myself," said Jayden Gatsen, who already graduated from the class. "I know what to do in case of an emergency."
Hannah Sullivan, who took the class last year, said she learned how to respond should there be an emergency on her watch.
"It taught me a lot," she said.
Rich Bauer of the United Phoenix Firefighters Association said parents love the class.
"They like to have a list of baby-sitters who have been trained in this," he said, explaining that parents like having access to backup baby-sitters who have the same safety training as their regular sitter.
But it's not just about the parents who might hire these certified baby-sitters.
"The beautiful thing about this program is you are looking at our next-generation parents," Bauer said of the kids who go through the training. "They already have that safety-minded attitude when they're older and decide to have families of their own."
The United Phoenix Firefighter's Association holds these events all year long, but they are especially packed as families gear up for summer.
Students will receive a workbook, certificate and an American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) certification card.
Hannah and Jayden said their certifications helped them make quite a bit of money last summer.
The event is Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Phoenix Fire Station #50, 35th Avenue and Loop 101. The cost? $35.
If your child can't make it to this weekend's event, there are more scheduled through the summer. Check the United Phoenix Firefighters Association Community Education Calendar for dates.
