Nighttime hikers rescued in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Two hikers were rescued Saturday night from Oak Creek Canyon.

The men, ages 17 and 21, both of Scottsdale, were lost in the dark with no flashlights or other light sources.

A search and rescue team was able to pinpoint the location of the hikers when they called 911 from their cellphone at about 8:45 p.m. The team found them around 11 p.m., providing flashlights and accompanying them down the mountain.

Coconino County authorities remind hikers and hunters to let someone else know where they are going and when they will return. They should also be prepared for an unexpected night out in the event of an accident or other emergency.

Phoenix and Scottsdale firefighters also conducted four separate mountain rescues Saturday, in the morning and afternoon. Three were fatigue cases, while the fourth was an ankle injury.
