PHOENIX (AP) -- A woman accused of trying to give her baby away to strangers outside a Phoenix convenience store last month has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 36-year-old Rozenna Luna entered her plea at her arraignment Monday. Her next scheduled court appearance is July 18.

Phoenix police say officers were called to the store May 15 to check on Luna and her 6-month-old daughter.

Witnesses told officers that Luna was asking strangers if they wanted a free child.

Police say Luna allegedly had been drinking and smoking methamphetamine two days before the incident.

They say she made no attempt to contact any safe haven locations, government agencies or family members for help.

Police also say Luna had outstanding misdemeanor warrants. The baby remains in state custody.
