PHOENIX -- A Gilbert woman was sentenced Friday to 13.5 years in prison and lifetime probation for abusing her adopted son.

Jennifer Barnes, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse in March.

Court paperwork showed the then 10-year-old boy was physically and sexually abused by Barnes.

Barnes was arrested in September 2011 on suspicion of child abuse and sexual contact with a minor.

According to court documents, the boy told investigators that Barnes put feces in his mouth and then taped it shut.

The boy also said Barnes burned him with a lighter and curling iron, and sodomized him with a toothbrush.

A physical exam discovered scarring consistent with the boy's account of the abuse.

Barnes was the sole caregiver during the dates of the alleged abuse.
