PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. -- A Pinal County detention officer was assaulted by an inmate Wednesday afternoon.

At about 4:50 p.m., 26-year-old Thomas John Johnson forced his way out of his cell when an officer opened the door to deliver his dinner tray. Johnson attacked him, and during the struggle, he attempted to choke the officer.

Johnson was eventually restrained when additional staff responded.

Johnson had been booked Tuesday for violating terms of his probation, failure to appear in court on aggravated assault charges, and escape. He will be charged with two new counts of aggravated assault at his preliminary hearing June 10.

The detention officer attacked by Johnson, as well as another officer involved in the confrontation, were taken to a local hospital Wednesday. They were treated and released the same day.
