PHOENIX -- A 2-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool at a home in west Phoenix Thursday evening, according to officials with the Phoenix Police Department.
Karishman Shephard was not breathing on her own when she was rushed to Phoenix Children's Hospital, according to a police spokesman. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said Karishman's grandmother was watching her at the home near 79th Avenue and Thomas Road. She lost track of the child for about 10 to 15 minutes and went to check on her. The grandmother then discovered the back sliding-glass door open and found the toddler in the pool.
There is no fence around the swimming pool.
Sgt. Steve Martos said other family members were at the home earlier in the day. It is believed that someone may have left the door open or ajar.
Police are investigating but say this appears to be a tragic accident.
"On its face there seems to be no foul play involved but our detectives come out thorough investigation of the scene, talk to the mother, and anyone else that may have any knowledge what occurred then they come to a conclusion down the road," explained Lt. Jeff Pierce with the Phoenix Police Department.
