PHOENIX – A Valley man who was arrested for breaking his infant son’s ribs will be spending the next few years behind bars.

Benjamin Cooper, 19, was sentenced on Thursday to three years in prison and 18 years of supervised probation.

Back in October, a social worker at Banner Thunderbird Hospital contacted the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office after Cooper’s then 5-week-old son was brought to the hospital suffering from dehydration and other injuries.

An examination of the child also revealed that he was suffering from broken ribs.

Cooper initially denied any wrongdoing, but eventually confessed to police that he had become frustrated one night when his son wouldn’t stop crying and swaddled him too hard.

Cooper told police that he was sorry and never meant to injure his child. He also said his wife had no role in injuring their child.

Cooper was arrested on one count of child abuse.
