PHOENIX -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested a man for allegedly killing his neighbor's pit bull.

MCSO spokesman Sgt. Brandon Jones said Briant Thomas Winnecke, 43, confessed to shooting the dog.

The animal was shot twice in the head with a shotgun at close range while it was tied to a fence near Joy Ranch Road and 20th Street Tuesday night.

Jones said the day before the shooting, the pit bull left its yard and wandered to a neighbor's house where it killed a 14-year-old basset hound.

Jones said Winnecke had nothing to do with either dog and simply lived nearby.

Winnecke was booked into jail for cruelty to animals and recklessly discharging the shotgun in a residential neighborhood.
