PHOENIX -- A Valley man was sentenced to life in prison Friday for killing an 11-year-old boy in a car crash.

David Wiggins, 32, will be eligible for parole after serving 35 years for first-degree murder.

Wiggins has also been sentenced to 19 years for aggravated assault, 1.5 years for unlawful flight, and 2.75 years for endangerment. The counts will run concurrently.

Wiggins was arrested in October 2011 after an undercover gang officer on patrol at a Chandler bar near Alma School and Knox saw Wiggins spin his wheels and fishtail as he left the bar.

The officer turned on his lights and followed Wiggins, but police eventually decided to back off as Wiggins sped through a red light and into oncoming traffic.

A short time later, Wiggins’ car collided with an SUV that was being driven by a man who had his two boys with him.

One of the children would eventually die several hours later from their injuries.
