PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -- A 5th grade student in Prescott Valley got in trouble with the law this week after he allegedly brought a BB gun on a school bus.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said they responded Wednesday afternoon after receiving word that there was an 11-year-old in possession of a handgun on a bus.

After locating the bus in a Mayer parking lot, deputies searched the boy’s backpack and found an “Air Soft” BB gun inside.

The boy told deputies that he had left the gun in his backpack after playing with it over the weekend.

The boy reportedly discovered the gun while on the bus and told another student he would show it to him if he didn’t tell anyone.

According to YCSO, the boy then showed the other student the BB gun and said he carried it “for protection.”

The other student told his father about the BB gun, and the father contacted YCSO.

The boy has been charged with interference/disruption of an education institution.

He was released to a Child Protective Services case worker for follow up.
