PHOENIX (AP) -- An 89-year-old San Diego woman has earned a degree from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Patti Burson received a master's degree in marriage and family therapy during Friday's commencement.

It was 68 years between degrees for Burson, who earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Albright College in Pennsylvania in 1945.

Burson had a lifetime goal of getting a second degree and completed her course work online with Grand Canyon.

She persevered through a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma less than two years ago and also a recent back ailment.

Burson plans to counsel baby boomers and seniors on issues related to retirement.

"Some of them retired too early," said Burson. "I don't believe anyone should retire unless they're unhealthy. How much golf can you play?"
