PHOENIX -- The Mesa justice of the peace who is accused of stealing from a Valley Walmart has stepped down from his position.

According to Richard Duarte with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, Mark Chiles resigned Wednesday citing medical reasons.

Surveillance video at a Mesa Walmart allegedly shows Chiles taking a $40 speaker out of its box on March 28, and then putting the empty box back on the shelf.

Chiles went on to pay for several other items, but not the speaker.

Police released video of their encounter with Chiles at his office in which he claims he thought he paid for the speaker.

Chiles goes on to tell police that he has spent thousands of dollars at Walmart, and has no reason to steal.

Chiles has since been cited for shoplifting.

His next court day is scheduled for May 13.
