PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are still investigating after two people were found shot inside a car that crashed in a residential neighborhood near 35th Avenue and Baseline Road.

It happened at about 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 3800 block of West Pollack.

"I was inside my house when I heard about four or five gunshots," said Patrick Smith, who lives one block away from the scene. "Sounded like a handgun, as opposed to a higher caliber. [The gunfire happened] very quick. Maybe all of it happened within a matter of seconds."

One victim, a 23-year-old black man, died after being shot at least once. The other victim, a 27-year-old Hispanic woman, was shot two or three times and survived.

Authorities haven't released the victims' names.

Phoenix Fire Department officials say when crews arrived at the scene, they found a man dead in the vehicle and a woman with multiple gunshot wounds to the legs and abdomen.

Police say the vehicle apparently drove up on the sidewalk and struck a tree, but it's unclear how the shooting occurred or how many people were involved.

Police found shell casings on nearby streets.

Police are still trying to determine why or how this incident unfolded. They said the suspect is a black male, but they don't have any other information.
