Child nearly drowns after crawling through doggy doorPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- A 1-year-old child was pulled from a backyard swimming pool in Mesa and rushed to Cardon Children's Medical Center Tuesday morning.
The boy was in extremely critical condition Tuesday evening after he crawled through a doggy door and fell in the swimming pool. There was no pool fence to stop him.
His aunt found him floating face down in the pool. She told police she accidentally fell asleep for 20 or 30 minutes while babysitting the boy and when she woke up she couldn't find him.
Initially, the child did not have a pulse and was not breathing, according to the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.
Firefighters say the scenario is far too common, especially this time of year.
"A 1-year-old doesn't have the decision-making ability to realize that it is not a good idea," said Larissa Dvorak with the Mesa Fire Department. "If they were in there over the weekend with the family and it was fun then they look out, see it, remember it and want to do it again."
Dvorak said a doggy door can be irresistible for a small child.
"They see the dog do it and it looks like fun and provides easy access on their level, easy way to get out of the house," Dvorak said.
Firefighters suggest having as many barriers as possible in place, especially this time of year when that pool is so desirable.
