PHOENIX -- A cab driver convicted of manslaughter in the 2011 beating death of a man in Avondale has been sentenced to 12.5 years in prison.
A jury found Gary Mayo, 46, of Peoria, guilty with an aggravating factor in February.
Mayo was arrested in August 2011 after witnesses told police they saw him and another man beating James Fournier, 57, in a shopping center parking lot near Dysart Road and Van Buren Street.
Witnesses told police that the fight broke out after Mayo backed his van out of a parking spot at and nearly hit the vehicle in which Fournier was a passenger. Fournier's wife and grandson were also in the vehicle.
Police decided not to pursue charges against the other man in the case, who was a passenger in Mayo's van.
