PHOENIX -- One man is in custody after a traffic stop turned into an officer-involved shooting and a short chase that ended in a crash.
The scene is a large one, stretching over more than a block in the neighborhood northwest of 35th Avenue and Camelback Road.
It started at about 1:30 a.m. when two officers tried to stop a driver, a Hispanic man in his 20s, for a traffic violation.
The man pulled into a driveway in the area of 36th and Oregon avenues, but refused to get out of the car. According to police, he then rammed the patrol car, as well as other vehicles parked in the area. As the driver started to leave the scene, one of the officers fired at least three shots.
The suspect kept going, but he only made it about a block. He missed a curve and crashed into a carport at 35th Drive and Georgia Avenue. Video from the scene showed the car with one of carport's supports on its hood.
Police say the suspect jumped out of the car and tried to run, but officers quickly caught him. Investigators believe the man was drunk.
Nobody was injured as all of this played out.
Police have not released any information about the suspect. The man is now facing a variety of charges, including DUI.
