PHOENIX -- A suspect died Saturday morning after Phoenix police officers shot him while taking him into custody.

Steve Martos, a spokesperson from Phoenix Police, said they responded to a "suspicious" person call at around midnight Saturday morning in the area of 79th Avenue and Indian School.

When officers arrived near the scene, they observed a man and woman getting into a cab. The cab started driving out of the neighborhood and drove up to the police cars,  which were parked on a side street.

Police said officers recognized the male suspect, 31-year-old Jonathan Pimental, as being a shooting suspect from this past Thursday night.  He was wanted for allegedly shooting his girlfriend.

The cab driver and female occupant were removed from the vehicle as police attempted to take Pimental into custody.

At some point, police say Pimental reached for something and that is when two Phoenix police officers shot and killed him.

Nobody else was injured.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
