Drug 'take back' event allows community to safely dispose of unused, unwanted, expired medsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Local law enforcement will participate in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day by holding events Saturday, April 27 to allow community members to dispose of unused, unwanted, and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications.
The drug "take back" event will allow people to safely and anonymously dispose of prescription medications at various sites across Arizona.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), last year’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day resulted in 244 tons of prescription medications being collected throughout the United States.
Arizona drug “take back” events bring in thousands of Arizonans that turn in more than 6,000 pounds of prescription drugs, according to the Tempe Police Department.
“Thanks to the efforts of the Arizona Drug Enforcement Administration, law enforcement across the state and our community, each year thousands of pounds of unused prescription drugs don’t end up on the streets,” said Chief of Police Tom Ryff. “The drug take back event supports our efforts on many fronts to fight crime and curtail drug addiction in the City of Tempe and throughout the Valley.”
According to the Tempe Police Department, one goal “is to impact accidental poisonings and overdoses due to the inappropriate use of prescription drugs.”
They will be taking the prescriptions in original containers but disposal is anonymous. Tempe Police also advise the community that they are not set up to safely handle reverse shipments from pharmaceutical and business distributers. They also cannot accept glass, syringes, injectables, needles or sharps.
The Tempe Police Department will hold its collection at the Tempe Police South Substation located at 8201 South Hardy Drive on the Southeast corner of Hardy and Carver. There will also be other collection sites around the state.
