CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Police are investigating a suspicious death near Pecos Road and Arizona Avenue in Chandler.

According to Sgt. Joe Favazzo with the Chandler Police Department, a man was dragged from an apartment and left in the front.

Favazzo said the man who dragged him went back into his apartment and slammed the door as officers approached.

A SWAT team responded to the scene.

The man later exited the apartment and was taken into custody. He was released a short time later. Police said he poses no threat to the community and is not considered a suspect at this time. His name was not released.

Favazzo said it appears that the reason he did not come out of the apartment when first contacted by police was due to his being intoxicated and he may not have understood that the officers were trying to get him to come outside.

The man who was dragged was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Jose Leon Vasquez, 52, of Chandler. Police are waiting for a report from the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

A city worker reported the incident at about 9:30 a.m. Monday.
