PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man charged with killing his brother-in-law has pleaded not guilty.

Police arrested Steven Lomax Jr., 33, for the shooting death of Richard Swann, 42, on Easter Sunday.

Lomax's sister called 911 to report that her brother had shot her husband at a home near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

According to court documents, Lomax spoke with the 911 operator and admitted shooting Swann and shot him again while on the phone.

Lomax surrendered when police arrived.

Lomax told police that it was the only way to end the mental and physical abuse he says his sister endured for years.

His next court date is May 29.
