MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police are investigating a homicide in a neighborhood near Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road.

Police received a phone call at approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday. The caller didn't say anything, but police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato said it sounded like there was some sort of assault and commotion going on in the residence.

Officers arrived and found three people in the house. One of them was critically injured and died at the scene. He has been identified as Nelson Baker, 22. Police have not released the cause of death.

Another person had fled from the home during what police were told was a home-invasion robbery.

Police were told three or four suspects committed the home invasion and left in a black car.

"It's scary," said Travis Osborne, who lives down the street from where the murder took place. "It's never nice to hear that, especially in your own neighborhood."

Police seized several marijuana plants from the home.

Landato said they have not confirmed a motive at this time and do not have anyone in custody.
