PHOENIX -- A Valley woman accused of having sexual contact with a 2-year-old relative has pleaded not guilty to charges of child abuse and sexual conduct with a minor.

Rickesha Burns, 21, entered her plea during an arraignment on Wednesday.

Police said they responded to Burns’ home on March 24 and found a young boy crying and bleeding from his backside.

The child was taken to the hospital where a foreign object was discovered inside the boy. He was also suffering from other rectal injuries.

Burns told officers that she had taken the child to a park earlier in the day where he had played with a 12-year-old boy.

Police said Burns claimed she had taken her eye off the boy for a brief moment, at which time he started crying.

Investigators found no evidence indicating the child had been assaulted in the park. They subsequently arrested Burns for her alleged role in the case.

Burns is due back in court on May 23.
