PHOENIX -- An Air Force pilot who graduated from a Glendale high school died after his fighter jet crashed in Afghanistan last week.

Capt. James Michael Steel, 29, of Tampa, Fla., was on a support mission when his F-16 went down near Bagram Airfield on April 3, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Military officials said there were no signs of insurgents in the area, but the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Steel was assigned to the 77th Fighter Squadron, Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

Steel was a graduate of Cactus High School, according to a spokeswoman from the Peoria Unified School District.
