Removing those hot summer stains

PHOENIX -- There are certain stains that are just miserable to remove and a few of them really seem to happen as the hot weather rolls around. Here’s what to do.

Mustard: First, NEVER apply ammonia or a product that contains ammonia to a mustard stain. It will react with the turmeric and guarantee that the stain is permanent. If garment label says “dry clean,” do not attempt to spot.

Scrape off every bit of mustard that you can so that you don’t spread it when you spot. If it is a fresh stain, blot -- don’t rub -- with a laundry stain remover or work in Fels Naptha Laundry Bar Soap. Flush with cold water. If the stain is still present, put a pad of paper towels under the stain and work in a solution of 3 parts dish soap and 1 part rubbing alcohol.

Still there? Try a paste of enzymatic cleaner such as Biz according to package directions.

Still there? It’s off to the rag bag.

Ketchup: Remove as much as you can with the edge of a spoon. Flush with cold water from the back of the fabric.

If the stain is still there work in liquid laundry detergent. If the garment is colorfast or white, apply hydrogen peroxide and let sit for 15 – 30 minutes. Launder as usual. Allow to air dry.

If stain is still there, work in Fels Naptha Laundry Bar Soap and let sit 15 minutes prior to re-laundering.

Juice: If the juice is already dry rub with glycerin (hand cream section at drug store) to regenerate it. Then treat with 1 part Dawn dish washing liquid and 2 part hydrogen peroxide. Launder as usual.

Be sure the stain is gone prior to putting in the dryer.

Milk: Scrape off any you can and then apply a paste of cold water and meat tenderizer. Let sit 30 minutes and launder as usual. Allow to air dry.

If the stain is still visible apply 1 part Dawn dish washing liquid and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide. Let soak for 30 minutes and then launder as usual.

Coffee/tea: Apply a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar. Work in well, let sit 15 minutes or so and then launder as usual.

If it is still present work in baking soda and cool water.

Still there? Try Biz enzymatic cleaner according to directions. Find Biz in the laundry aisle.
