GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- New details are emerging about the the Goodyear man who faces two counts of first degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his wife and adult son.
Goodyear police say 64 year old Eugene Maraventano is accused of murder in the deaths of 63 year old Janet Maraventano, and 27 year old Bryan Maraventano.
On April 6, Goodyear police received a 911 call from a man who said, " I killed my wife and I killed my son, I can't kill myself." He then told the dispatcher, "I stabbed them to death. My wife had cancer."
According to police reports, when Goodyear officers arrived at the home near 143rd Avenue and Indian School, they spotted Maraventano leaving the home, wearing bloody clothes.
Once inside the house, detectives say they found blood stains and spatter on the carpet, tile, doors and walls. They found Janet Maraventano dead in the master bedroom. She had apparently been stabbed. Her body was reportedly lying near a 14 inch kitchen knife.
Court documents show that officers then found the body of Maraventano's son, Bryan, in another bedroom. He had also apparently been stabbed.
According to court documents, Maraventano told police that years ago, he had frequented prostitutes, and believed that he may have contracted HIV or other diseases, and passed them on to his wife, leading to her recent illness.
Maraventano reportedly told police that he had been afraid that his wife would test positive for a disease that he gave her, so he decided to kill her. When detectives asked him why he used a knife he reportedly told them, "I'm not a violent person."
According to court documents, Maraventano told detectives that he decided to kill his son because he "played video games all day, has no girlfriend and must be handicapped because he can't get a job".
Maraventano then told detectives that he tried several ways to commit suicide, including cutting his wrist, suffocating himself with a plastic bag. He also reportedly told police that he had killed his wife and son about four days ago.
Maraventano also had stab wounds, and was taken to the hospital for treatement before being booked.
