PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested two Guatemalan nationals this week for allegedly trying to enter the country illegally.
According to MCSO, deputies stopped a Ford van with Mississippi plates on Friday night and 14 people fled the vehicle.
A search involving canines and helicopters took place, but deputies were only able to locate two of the suspects.
MCSO said the individuals revealed that they were from Guatemala, and that they had paid $5,000 to be taken to New York and Florida.
Detectives booked both people into the 4th Avenue Jail on felony human smuggling charges.
The other 12 people who were in the van remain at large.
