PHOENIX -- Phoenix police said they arrested a man this week after he fatally stabbed a man who had been arguing with his girlfriend.

According to police, officers responded to the area of Bethany Home Road and 19th Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. Friday after learning of a stabbing.

Police discovered that the victim had been taken to a hospital by an unknown man.

The man reportedly dropped the victim off, told hospital staff he was having problems breathing, and then fled the hospital without providing any more information.

Staff at the hospital began tending to the victim, but he eventually died from a stab wound.

Homicide detectives began investigating the case and learned that the victim was 34-year-old Steve Ildefonso.

Investigators also received information that led them to a home near Montebello and 39th Avenue.

Detectives arrived at the home and found multiple people inside, including the suspect Jason Gertchen

After conducting several interviews, investigators learned that Ildefonso had gotten into an argument with Gertchen’s girlfriend.

During the argument, Gertchen allegedly stabbed Ildefonso.

A resident at the home then rushed Ildefonso to the hospital.

Gertchen, 36, was subsequently arrested and booked into jail on one count of second-degree murder.
